چکیده

Date_____________________ The final copy of this thesis has been examined by the signators, and we find that both the content and the form meet acceptable presentation standards of scholarly work in the above mentioned discipline. Agentsheets Genetic Evolutionary Simulations (AGES) is a system developed with Agentsheets with VisualAgenTalk (AS-VAT) to promote the study of complex adaptive systems (cas) subject to evolution. AGES can be used to model a wide array of cas, from ecological systems such as a rain forest to economic systems such as the New York Stock Exchange. Being embedded in AS-VAT, AGES enables non-expert end-users of all ages to explore interesting and important concepts of cas through programming.

Collaborative use & design of interactive simulations

Interactive simulations hold great potential as a communication vehicle capable of improving the usefulness of technology in education. While some benefit can be gained by simply using pre-built simulations, learners benefit most from designing all or at least some aspects of their own simulations. The challenge is to enable this design-as-learning activity without turning students into program...

Programming Agents with Visual Rules

A visual programming facility is described which is based on a visual rule formalism. It permits programmers to specify the behaviors of agents in the class of program objects in the Agentsheets system of Repen-ning. The resulting agents can be used in designing simulations for two-dimensional cellular worlds such as in automobile traac ow situations, video games, and cellular automata studies....

Heterogeneity in Individual Mortality Risk and Its Importance for Evolutionary Studies of Senescence.

Mortality was simulated under the assumption of heterogeneity in individual age-specific mortality risk. Heterogeneity was modeled by assigning each individual its own Gompertz mortality function. Means and variances of the Gompertz intercept and slope parameters were based on published data for Drosophila melanogaster. Simulations of large cohorts reproduced mortality plateaus similar to those...

Moving Beyond Syntax: Lessons from 20 Years of Blocks Programing in AgentSheets

The blocks programming community has been preoccupied with identifying syntactic obstacles that keep novices from learning to program. Unfortunately, this focus is now holding back research from systematically investigating various technological affordances that can make programming more accessible. Employing approaches from program analysis, program visualization, and real-time interfaces can ...

Learn to Communicate and Communicate to Learn

Thinking of a computer as an educational tool emphasizes a solitary interaction between the learner and the computer. A tool is something that is applied to an object in order to change it, and this usually implies a single user working on a single object or project. While tools are an important aspect of an educational experience, the tool metaphor can isolate individual learners from each oth...
